Suffering is the start of happiness.
If you are reading this you must be suffering or trying to help someone who is suffering. I want to help with something i have learnt from life that i want to share here.
Its the fastest route to finding joy and peace. I did not say the easiest. But the fastest.
We tend to get scared of suffering. Who wants to tread into pain and chaos. Nobody. So we run away from it and hide behind our screens and shades. But invariably pain strikes and suffering joins in the embrace. And then begins a war with this state of being. We resist it, work it away, shop it away and in the worst cases pray for it to go away. Yet it persists. In fact intensifies. Anger turns to rage and then to chronic stress and depression. The next thing that goes is trust as you start expanding your circle of doubt of human behaviour. Before you know it you are alone with your suffering mind and no one around who wants to help.
But you have a choice at this moment. Keep resisting it and letting your mind inflate its own ego centric bundle of emotions or make the courageous choice and surrender.
Surrender is an act of courage that uses the generosity of forgiveness and gratitude as its weapon against the tyranny of your egoic mind that feels wronged.
The moment you say the words “i forgive you for…”and “i am grateful for what you have …” you discover a strange sensation emerging in your body. You notice the warmth in your heart. The kind of warmth that is selfless. The kind of warmth that wants to embrace and not erase. Its a warmth that first embraces you like a mother embraces her new born.
The warmth is the first sign that this is a new kind of drug that you yet to try. Your body is being healed by an inner being that lies deeper than your mind. It lies deep in the hidden past of your consciousness that you would never have discovered had it not been for this act of surrender.
This warmth is baffling at first but the more you practice the acts of gratitude and forgiveness the more this warmth will grow. This will -i promise — calm your suffering to the point of curing it. The pain will take a bit more time and its natural but you will find a inner peace that you might not have ever found if you went shopping for the obvious loaf freshly baked happiness.
And this inner peace will slowly and surely blossom into a lasting sense of hope and joy for humanity. And you might see the world has miraculously changed forever for you for the better.
But it all started with suffering.
